Originally from a small town in Northern California quaintly named Mt. Aukum…population “very few”, April Visel has grown into a well respected, award-winning photographer. Although her work is reflected in all types of imagery, her love and specialty is Equine Photography. Since the age of four she has embraced the companionship that can only be understood by those who have experienced that of the horse.

As a child, when she wasn’t riding, she spent countless hours studying and drawing horses, and to this day is completely obsessed with everything “horse.”

At twenty-six she found her soul mate, or as she might say, he found her! As an experienced photographer and musician he opened up a whole new world. After attending school to become a makeup artist working hand in hand with photographers, she finally realized she was on the wrong side of the camera and acquiesced to her passion.

Since that day, she has not looked back and with the encouragement and support of her husband has been able to turn that passion into a healthy business. Although she is known for shooting weddings, family, travel, landscape, and architecture, it wasn’t until an official shoot of her friend’s horse that two and two came together and she found her calling.

The artist is what comes through most significantly in her work, producing a creative, bold, and identifiable fine art feel. Her training in make up artistry has also strengthened her eye for nuances in color and the complexities of light, which in turn undeniably reveals the emotional and visual essence of “the story” in her work. The belief is, that one day she might break equine art out of the insular box of back yard poses, and afternoon pony rides into one of the respectable art world, broadening appreciation for the spirit of the horse.

At the same time, April is very familiar with the many equine breeds and disciplines, which lends itself well to promotional, conformation, and advertising. Although she specializes in Arabians and the Baroque breeds, her love for all horses is deep rooted as she is constantly taken back by the loyalty and beauty seen in every horse. There truly is a connection between horse and human, and her goal is to capture and portray that
connection on camera.

April is a member of the “International Horse Photographer’s Association”, “Equine Photographer’s Network” and “ The Arabian Horse Association”, and numerous other photography forums and groups. Having an understanding of the constant progression of photography, she is always finding ways to stay educated and artistically inspired.

She has currently teamed up with Master photographer, and friend, Sherron Sheppard to teach a Photography/Adobe Photoshop Workshop entitled "DIGITAL ARTISTRY IN MOTION."18 photographers from across the country convene in beautiful Ojai and Santa Ynez, Ca to shoot some of the most amazing horses in the world. The workshop has met with rave reviews and a loyal following. It now takes place twice a year.

Whether it is from ranches, farms, respected peers and colleagues, or the six year old girl on her prize winning pony, April has received countless accolades and awards for her vision and unique artistic perspective on life.

She has said, “Few things move me more than standing in a field of horses…with camera in hand”.
